Duo jailed, fined over thefts
The charge, under Section 380 of the Penal Code, carries a jail term of up to 10 years and a fine, on conviction.
Kota Kinabalu: A 30-year-old unemployed man was sentenced to four weeks’ jail and fined RM1,000 or five weeks’ jail for stealing a bottle of perfume from a shop at a shopping mall here.

Minzamin Nusain pleaded guilty before Magistrate Dzul Elmy Yunus to stealing a bottle of Burberry Goddess Eau de Parfum from the Beauty Love shop at Jesselton Mall at 7.19pm on March 6, 2026.

The charge, under Section 380 of the Penal Code, carries a jail term of up to 10 years and a fine, on conviction.

The court was informed by the prosecution that the complainant discovered the missing item during a stock check on March 12 and found that there was no corresponding sales record.

A review of CCTV footage showed a man, later identified as Minzamin, taking the perfume and placing it into his trouser pocket before leaving the shop without making payment.

Acting on information, police later arrested Minzamin at a lodging house in Kg Air, here, and brought him to the Kota Kinabalu District Police Headquarters for further investigation.

Meanwhile, a 54-year-old woman was jailed seven days and fined RM800, or five weeks’ imprisonment in default, for shop theft at a mini market in Inanam.

Eda Dollah pleaded guilty before the same magistrate to stealing items from a 99 Speedmart outlet at Inanam Taipan at 2.19pm on March 3. She admitted to stealing four bottles of Moccona coffee (200g) and eight bottles of Capilano honey (400g) belonging to the outlet.

The offence, under Section 380 of the Penal Code, carries imprisonment of up to 10 years and a fine.

The court heard that a store employee saw Eda placing items into her handbag before leaving the premises without paying.

The employee attempted to stop her but she fled in a vehicle.

CCTV footage later confirmed the theft, and police arrested Eda on March 10 and some of the stolen items were recovered during the arrest. An eyewitness also identified Eda as the person involved in the incident.

The court ordered Minzamin and Eda to serve their jail sentence from the date of arrest.
