MEMBAKUT: A Modenas motorcycle rider was killed while his pillion rider suffered a broken right leg in a collision with a Perodua Ativa at Km19 of the Beaufort-Papar road near Taman Emas Takapan on Wednesday at about 9.21pm.
District Police Chief Supt Wong Leong Meng confirmed the accident on Thursday, adding that all occupants of the car escaped unhurt.
The deceased was identified as Herrvin Rowell Sylvester, 19, while his pillion rider, a 14-year-old student of SMK Membakut, sustained a broken right leg. Both are from Kg Bawan, here.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while the injured pillion rider was taken to Beaufort Hospital for treatment.
Wong said preliminary investigations found that the car had entered the opposite lane before colliding head-on with the motorcycle.
“The impact of the collision caused the motorcyclist and his pillion rider to be thrown into a drain along with the motorcycle,” he said.
Wong added that the motorcycle was travelling from Papar towards Beaufort, while the Perodua Ativa was heading from Beaufort towards Kota Kinabalu.
“The vehicles collided head-on. The car was driven by a 20-year-old Korean, accompanied by three other Korean passengers who were travelling from Brunei. All the passengers, including the driver, were not injured in the incident,” said Wong.
The car driver has been detained to assist in investigations, and a post-mortem on the deceased was conducted the following day.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
