PENAMPANG: The sports track at the Penampang Sports Complex is in urgent need of refurbishment, according to Youth, Sports and Creative Economy Minister Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan.
During his visit to several sports complexes across Sabah, including Kota Kinabalu, Penampang, Sandakan, and Tongod, the minister noted that some facilities are in poor condition.
In Tongod, he terminated a contractor and reopened the tender process to ensure better management and accountability.
“The state of our sports complexes requires attention and upgrades to provide comfort and safety for athletes and the public,” he said.
Ministry officials have been instructed to prepare budgets for submission to the Finance Ministry.
He said Sabah currently has 17 sports complexes, many of which require refurbishment.
He was met after a break fast jointly organised by Pertubuhan Masyarakat Interaktif Suara Sabah (Misur) and Pertubuhan Kebajikan Cahaya Sabah on Tuesday, supporting 66 underprivileged groups including persons with disabilities, children in need, and the elderly.
Nizam said although Islam is a minority faith in the Penampang and Kepayan area, the event welcomed guests from all backgrounds, reflecting the State’s long-standing tradition of multiracial respect and harmony
He expressed hope that such programs would continue in the coming years to strengthen community understanding and unity, while supporting government initiatives for youth development.
Misur Chairman Dr Abdul Rashid Hassan praised the event’s theme, “Media Without Borders: Facts Cannot Be Separated,” highlighting the vital role of responsible media in today’s fast-moving digital era.
“Media serves not only to report news but also as a bridge connecting society to truth and facts. Accurate, fair, and ethical reporting is a crucial responsibility,” he said.
He expressed gratitude to media professionals committed to delivering transparent and trustworthy news, noting their role in shaping an informed and united society.
