SANDAKAN: Eagles Rugby Club planted 52 trees comprising 16 native species at Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC) Sandakan, on Saturday as part of the Borneo 7s Green Legacy Initiative carried out in partnership with the Sabah State Forestry Department, event sponsors, selected players and community leaders.
The species planted include Borneo endemics and ecologically significant fig trees known to attract wildlife such as orangutans, proboscis monkeys and hornbills.
The 50 trees are estimated to absorb over 1.1 tonnes of CO2 and release more than 5 tonnes of oxygen per year, with projected carbon capture of over 28 tonnes across 25 years.
An additional sustainability effort of the tournament, three electric vehicles, Proton e.Mas 7 sponsored by Fook Loi will also be used to ferry officials and players to the venue to ensure that carbon impacts are minimised.
The Borneo 7s Rugby Tournament 2026 takes place on April 10-11 at Eagles Rugby Club Stadium, Sandakan, featuring 16 teams from eight countries across Asia, Oceania and Europe.
The Borneo 7s is an international invitational rugby sevens tournament first inaugurated in 2001 and organised by Eagles Rugby Club Sandakan.
Now in its 21st edition, the tournament is officially sanctioned by Asia Rugby and branded as “The Greenest 7s in the World.”
