SANDAKAN: Police are investigating an incident in which a Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS) enforcement officer was allegedly assaulted by a group of men while conducting patrols at the Mile 8 Market area on Friday afternoon.
District police chief ACP George Abd Rakman said the incident occurred about 2.30pm when the officer and a colleague were monitoring business activities in the market.

He said the officer had reprimanded a man believed to be openly selling untaxed cigarettes in the area before an argument broke out, and the officer was allegedly attacked by several unidentified individuals.
The victim sustained bruises on several parts of his body, while police have identified several individuals believed to be involved, and one arrest has been made so far.
The case is being investigated under Section 186, Section 332 and Section 147 of the Penal Code, while members of the public with information are urged to contact the nearest police station to assist investigations.
