KUNAK: A solid waste management concession company has placed several large Roll-On Roll-Off (RORO) bins at selected locations around commercial buildings in Kunak town to cope with the increase in rubbish during Ramadan and Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
Kunak District Council Executive Officer Mohd Nazri Pintal said the main locations include Boheyan Plaza, Sapang Building and most recently Kunak Plaza.
“The Council was informed that the concession company placed a large RORO bin at Kunak Plaza on Monday following complaints from the public about overflowing rubbish behind the premises,” he told the Daily Express.
Previously, only domestic wheelie bins were provided in the area, but these were unable to handle the higher volume of waste since the start of Ramadan.
The public is urged to dispose of their rubbish directly into the RORO bins to prevent stray dogs from scavenging for leftover food if the existing domestic bins are already full.
The larger RORO bins are able to hold bulky waste such as old furniture, used tyres and daily domestic waste from business or agricultural activities. They are also seen as more practical and effective in managing large amounts of waste in town and nearby villages, while helping to prevent illegal dumping along roadsides.
“Large RORO bins also reduce the number of collection trips, as each bin takes longer to fill compared to domestic wheelie bins,” he said.
