TAWAU: The Government has been urged to expedite the implementation of Phase 1B of the Sungai Tawau Flood Mitigation Project this year to address recurring floods, particularly in Sin Onn and Jalan Chong Thien Vun.
Sabah DAP committee member Philip Yap said many Tawau residents were again affected when floodwaters rose rapidly on Saturday night following continuous heavy rain.

He said the situation worsened due to high tide, causing water levels to surge to waist height in Batu 3.5 Jalan Sin Onn and several residential areas along Jalan Chong Thien Vun.
Philip attributed the rapid rise in water levels to delays in the implementation of Phase 1B, noting that Phase 1A at the downstream section of Sungai Tawau had been fully completed while Phase 1B faced delays due to cost factors and land compensation issues along the river.
He said the delay had created a bottleneck effect at Taman Green, resulting in river overflow into nearby low-lying housing areas, and urged that Phase 1B be expedited this year to ease flooding in areas including Jalan Sin Onn, Kampung Baru and Kampung Saddani.
