The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment has been urged to give serious consideration to the proposed construction of a Tawau Tourism Jetty to enable the district to benefit more substantially from the tourism sector and further stimulate local economic growth.
Sri Tanjong Assemblyman Justin Wong said the proposal has been among his key priorities throughout his tenure, expressing hope that the project will eventually come to fruition.
He said that building a tourist jetty is not an overly complex undertaking for the government, adding that his recent engagement with the newly formed Tawau Tourism Association had strengthened his confidence that the initiative could be realised.
“I raised the proposal for a Tawau Tourism Jetty during the State Legislative Assembly, as I hope tourists arriving in Tawau will not proceed directly to Semporna but instead make Tawau their first stop. I want them to visit, explore and spend here so that our local economy can grow,” he said.
