PAITAN: The district was declared a flood disaster area at 6am Friday after continuous heavy rain caused water levels to rise sharply, affecting several hotspot locations.
The declaration was made by the District Disaster Management Committee following field reports confirming severe flooding in multiple areas.
District Officer Joloning Joe Majambu said the move enables emergency response and immediate aid to be mobilised to affected residents.
Monitoring is ongoing in high-risk zones, with relevant agencies on standby for evacuations and coordination of assistance if conditions worsen.
Videos shared online show floodwaters inundating parts of Pekan Paitan, including the Fishermen’s Market building, which is nearly fully submerged.
More than eight vehicles have been reported underwater, while residents were seen using boats to monitor the situation.
