TAWAU: The declaration of a drought disaster in Pulau Sebatik, announced by the Tawau District Disaster Management Committee (JPBD) at 10am on Wednesday, has been withdrawn.
JPBD Chairman Joseph Pang, in a statement issued at 1.50pm, said the decision was made in line with the view of the Sabah State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN).
He said the withdrawal followed a review and monitoring by the authorities which found that the current situation no longer met the criteria of a drought disaster as defined.
“Water supply and weather conditions in Tawau remain under control and stable, although water shortages in parts of Pulau Sebatik are becoming increasingly concerning,” he said.
He said the authorities would continue discussions and monitoring from time to time to ensure the situation remains under control.
He also advised the public not to spread outdated or inaccurate information and to refer to official channels for updates while practising prudent water usage.
Joseph, who is also Tawau Municipal Council (MPT) President, had announced the drought disaster declaration earlier, at 10am, based on field reports received from JPBD agencies.
Meanwhile, Tawau Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) Chief Jemishin Ujin said the State Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Operations Centre had issued advisories to the public on the ongoing hot and dry weather conditions in the State.
He said the public is reminded to avoid open burning during hot and dry conditions, as it can lead to environmental damage, health risks such as haze and breathing difficulties and the danger of fire spreading, and to contact the emergency line 999 in case of any incidents.
