TAWAU: The state has approved a new low-cost flat project in Tawau under the Residensi Sabah Maju Jaya (PRSMJ) programme, aimed at relocating squatters and B40 families into safer, planned housing.
The project, inspired by the former federal PPR scheme, will use a rent-to-own model and represents a state-led effort to tackle housing issues without relying solely on federal funding.

Tawau MP Datuk Lo Su Fui said the initiative, endorsed by the Chief Minister, is meant to reduce fire risks and unsafe living conditions in squatter areas.
Authorities are identifying suitable sites near Batu 2 and Batu 4 Jalan Apas and Balung, focusing on land suitability, infrastructure and access to workplaces.
Lo spoke after delivering aid to 80 families affected by a recent fire at a temporary evacuation centre in Tawau. Minister Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan also contributed personal emergency assistance.
A fire last Monday destroyed over 40 homes in Kg Titingan, leaving about 350 people homeless.
