Kota Kinabalu: A 28-year-old man was charged in the Sessions Court here with having Mitragynine, locally known as Ketum, a scheduled poison under the Poisons Act.
Mohd Ridzwan Romzi, a maintenance worker, pleaded not guilty before Judge Marlina Ibrahim to having 1,500ml of the substance, listed in the Third Schedule (Psychotropic Substances) of the Poisons Act 1952, on Jan 23, this year, at 12.20pm, in front of a house at Kg Gudon, Manggatal.

The charge under Section 30(3) of the Poison Act 1952, provides for a fine of up to RM100,000 or up to five years or both on conviction.
Deputy Public Prosecutor DK Afiqah Alya PG Johari applied for another mention date pending the chemist’s report and offered no bail but proposed RM10,000 should the court offer bail.
Unrepresented, Ridzwan requested bail by saying that he has family to look after.
The court fixed March 2 for mention and offered the accused bail at RM5,000 in two sureties and also ordered him to report to the police station once a month.
Meanwhile, a 41-year-old man was charged in the Magistrate’s Court with having a stolen laptop.
Md Soffiandy Abdul Rahman pleaded guilty to having the stolen MacBook Pro laptop, belonging to one Ng Lun Jing, on Jan 23, at 8pm, at Lorong Juta 2, Likas.
The charge is framed under Section 411 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to five years or fine or both on conviction.
The court set Jan 6 for the fact and sentencing and offered Soffiandy bail of RM2,000 in two sureties pending the date.
In another case, a 26-year-old man was charged with having copper believed to be stolen.
Abilik Celimina pleaded not guilty to having a bundle of copper wires, which he failed to give explanation on how he obtained them on Jan 27, at 5.30pm, at Bantayan Hill, Inanam.
He was charged under Section 22A of the Minor Offences Ordinance, which provides for an RM100 fine or a jail term of up to three months or both.
The court fixed Jan 6 for pre-trial case management and released Abilik on bail of RM1,000 in one surety.
