KOTA KINABALU: City Hall (DBKK) will apply a non-slip coating to the newly upgraded Atkinson Clock Tower walkway after visitors complained the tiles become slippery when wet.
Mayor Datuk Seri Sabin Samitah said the anti-slip paint contains grit to improve traction, but the monsoon season has delayed the work.
He said yellow grip tapes have been placed along the steps leading to the treetop line trail as an immediate safety measure following reports of several falls.
Sabin said the consultant had chosen tiles that are safe under normal conditions, but the surface becomes risky when people run on it during rain.
He said the temporary measures aim to reduce hazards while waiting for suitable weather to continue the coating application.
Sabin added that DBKK’s technical team is identifying materials that remain safe even when wet, dismissing claims that the tiles were poorly or cheaply installed.
He said the matter has been addressed for now and reminded visitors to be cautious on the steps, especially during the rainy season, following the tower’s RM11.96 million reopening this month.
