MEMBAKUT: Residents of Kampung Lampijas are appealing to the government to resolve the decades-old issue of an excessively low-lying village road, which has caused frequent flash floods for the past 50 years.
A Non-Governmental Organisation leader Yahya Ahmad, said the problem has persisted for half a century without any meaningful solution.
He said the low road level has repeatedly disrupted connectivity for villagers, especially during heavy rain, and urged the authorities to raise the road by at least three feet to prevent it from being cut off.
“It is not a long stretch of road. Raising it would prevent residents from being isolated. At the same time, the drainage system also needs to be deepened and cleared, as it is now overgrown with bushes. Why should residents continue to suffer from this?” he told Daily Express reporters on Sunday
Yahya stressed that it is crucial to ensure the road remains passable, especially when the flooding occurs so close to the village. He expressed sympathy for the residents, saying the issue has been neglected for far too long.
“It is unbelievable that previous governments could not resolve this problem and allowed villagers to face it for fifty years,” he said.
He added that although the government has allocated substantial funds over the years, issues like this remain unresolved despite repeated complaints from the community.
Yahya also questioned the whereabouts of Membakut Assemblyman Datuk Mohd Arifin Arif and Kimanis MP Datuk Mohammad Alamin, asking why the problem has been allowed to persist.
“Remember, the State Election is not far off. If this continues, the people may express their frustration at the ballot box in the coming polls,” he warned.
