SANDAKAN: Elopura will see a seven-way contest in the 17th Sabah State Election, drawing a mix of familiar faces and new challengers eager to win the confidence of voters.
The candidates include Jeffrey Chung of Parti Impian Sabah, incumbent Calvin Chong of Warisan, independent candidate Lita Tan Abdullah, Muhammad Firdaus @ Silvester Abdullah of Perikatan Nasional, Liau Fui Fui of KDM, Wong Hon Kong of PPRS, and Sandakan MP Vivian Wong Shir Yee of Pakatan Harapan.
In neighbouring Tanjong Papat, an eight-corner fight has taken shape involving Datuk Mohd Yunus Apil of Perjuangan Rakyat, Tang Szu Ching of PH, Sohaimi Ramli of Parti Kebangsaan Sabah, incumbent Datuk Poon Ming Fung @ Frankie of KDM, Jainudin Berahim of PIS, Henley Liew of SAPP, Koa Wei Yang of PN, and Alex Thien of Warisan.
Frankie, who previously held the seat under DAP, shifted to KDM after leaving the party last October in support of local political aspirations, while Vivian said she had kept quiet about her candidacy earlier to focus on Sandakan’s ongoing water supply issues.
Returning Officer Datu Roslin Datu Siabok confirmed that all nomination papers were accepted without rejection when submissions closed at 10am at the Dewan Tionghua Sandakan Nomination Centre on Saturday.
