Kota Kinabalu: A 42-year-old man was charged in the Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, with having counterfeit currency treated as genuine, last week.
Fernandez D. Mathews, a collector, pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Dzul Elmy Yunus to the charge of having counterfeit banknotes on July 22, at 12.30am, at a house in Kg Nosoob Baru, Penampang,

Fernandez was alleged to have nine RM100 notes bearing the same serial number DP4935919, 17 RM50 notes with serial numbers SQ9710130, UE3276909 and UE3276911, and one RM50 note without a serial number.
He was charged under Section 489C of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of 10 years on conviction.
Inspector Mohamad Hamidi Mohamad Hamzah, prosecuting, in applying for a new mention date, proposed bail at RM4,000 while Fernandez requested a lower bail amount.
Dzul fixed Sept 22 for pre-trial case management and released the accused on a bail of RM2,000 in two sureties.
In another case, a woman was sentenced to three months jail for engaging in a gambling activity in public.
Siti Nurain pleaded guilty to committing the offence on May 22, at 7.30pm, near a staircase of a shop in Manggatal Baru.
The charge is framed under Section 7(2) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 which provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or a jail term of up to six months or both on conviction.
The court heard from the prosecution that Siti was arrested during a police raid at the said place.
Siti was ordered to serve the sentence from the date of her arrest.
Meanwhile, a man was jailed five months for taking drugs.
Aiki Liunaldu pleaded guilty to committing the offence here in June.
The court ordered him to serve the sentence from the date of his arrest and be placed under police supervision for two years.
