KUCHING: Sarawak’s iconic layer cake is a staple for Aidilfitri, but one version is turning heads with a hefty RM1,800 price tag per tray, the
New Straits Times reported.
Known as “Kek Lapis Sultan”, the premium creation by Abg K’ju Cake House is among the most expensive on the market, its creator Adhar Brahim, 38, said.
He said the price reflects the use of premium ingredients and the meticulous, time-consuming process, with everything from ingredients to technique and preparation carried out at a premium level to achieve perfectly balanced texture and taste.
Adhar, who sees the cake as a work of art rather than just a dessert, said the process takes over eight hours and requires precise control of temperature and timing to ensure even layers and consistent texture.
Using Wijsman butter, imported dried fruits and specially selected nuts, the cake weighs more than five kg per tray and is limited to 200 trays, with smaller portions available, while he added that although some joke about the price, loyal customers understand the quality involved.
