KENINGAU: Assistant Minister of Works, Datuk Robert Tawik, urged the people to alter the common misconception that only State and Federal government agencies participate in promoting independence month by flying the Jalur Gemilang and Sabah flags.

According to him, the people must take the initiative to support the campaign to fly the flags in each of their own homes.

“I ask the people not to depend too much on government assistance and just wait for the free flag from the department involved in this independence month campaign,” he said while welcoming the Stat level Kembara Merdeka Keluarga Malaysia (KMKM) convoy at Kampung Merampong.

He called on the people in this district to fly together the Jalur Gemilang and the Sabah flag at their residences and business premises as well as to fuel the celebration of this month of independence. As Malaysian who love peace, he said, they should take the opportunity to appreciate the true meaning of independence because  independence is not just a mere rhetoric of telling history but it is the moment when this country is free from the grip of colonialism and makes it possible to form its own nation state.

“In conjunction with the 65th National Day, we should take the opportunity and space together to appreciate the true meaning of independence because it will further increase the spirit of patriotism and love for the country in each of us,” he said.

Robert said, this year’s National Day theme, “Keluarga Malaysia Teguh Bersama” is in line with the current situation in Malaysia which shows the concern of the government as well as Malaysians who are multi-racial, working together and persevering to face the challenges and face the Covid-19 epidemic. He said the Kembara Merdeka convoy is carried out every year to rekindle the spirit of love for the country and celebrate the month of independence. Also present at the celebration were State Information Department Director Nadzerah Abdullah, District Officer Walter Kenson, Head of the KMKM convoy Azman Sipan, Bingkor Community Development Leader Junior Fred Vincent, Kampung Merampong Village Head Mohd Rizal Abdullah and Chairman of the Development and Security Committee Village Said Saopen.
