COVID-19: Malaysia breaches 5,000 mark for second straight day with 5,728 new cases
PETALING JAYA: The health ministry has reported a record high 5,728 Covid-19 cases, three more than yesterday’s new high. There were also 13 deaths reported in the past 24 hours.

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said there were 3,805 recoveries, bringing the total number of those discharged to 161,527.

In a statement, Noor Hisham said the total number of infections now stands at 209,661.

There are 47,388 active cases, with 319 patients being treated in intensive care and 120 requiring respiratory assistance.

Meanwhile, the 13 deaths take the number of fatalities to 746.

The new cases today involved 5,723 local infections and five imported cases.

Selangor recorded the highest number of cases today with 3,285, while others that recorded three-digit infections were Johor (792), Kuala Lumpur (480), Sabah (263), Sarawak (191), Negeri Sembilan (158), Perak (112) and Penang (101).

They were followed by Kedah (99), Terengganu (85), Pahang (51), Melaka (42), Labuan (29), Kelantan (28) and Putrajaya (12). Perlis did not report any cases today.

There were 132 cases from prisons and detention centres, most of which came from the Jalan Harapan prison cluster (103 cases).

The 13 dead today comprised 12 Malaysians and one foreigner, aged between 41 and 78. All of them had existing medical conditions.

Three of the dead were only found to be Covid-19 positive after their bodies were brought to the hospital and tested for the virus.

The health ministry has detected 16 new Covid-19 clusters in the past 24 hours, health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said today.

In a statement, he said 13 of them involve workplaces while the other three were community clusters.

Six clusters were detected in Johor, three in Pahang, two each in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur, and one each in Sabah, Perak and Terengganu.

The Jalan Trompet cluster is a workplace cluster involving Klang and Petaling, with its index cases testing positive on Jan 30 in a workplace screening. The workplace is located at Jalan Trompet in Shah Alam. A total of 131 people have been screened with 74 found positive.

The Kampung Hala cluster is a workplace cluster in Sabak Bernam, with its first case found positive on Jan 29 in a screening after exhibiting symptoms. Its name refers to a public institution at Kampung Hala Cara Baru in Sungai Besar, where the cases were reported. Some 77 people have been screened with 27 testing positive.

The Jalan Suasa cluster is a workplace cluster in Johor Bahru, with its index cases testing positive on Jan 30 in a screening at a factory on Jalan Suasa in the Pasir Gudang industrial area. A total of 214 people have been screened with 29 found positive.

The Jalan Riang cluster is another workplace cluster in Johor Bahru, with its first few cases found positive on Jan 28 in a screening at a factory on Jalan Riang in the Gembira Industrial Park. Some 270 people have been screened with 13 testing positive.

The Bintang Utama cluster is a workplace cluster in Kulai, with its index case testing positive on Jan 22 in a screening after exhibiting symptoms. Its name refers to the workplace at Jalan Lapangan Terbang, Taman Bintang Utama in Senai, where the cases were reported. A total of 141 people have been screened with 29 found positive.

The Jalan Lombong cluster is a workplace cluster in Kota Tinggi, with its first case found positive on Jan 21 in a screening after exhibiting symptoms. Its name refers to the workplace’s locality in Batu 2, Jalan Lombong at the Kota Tinggi Industrial Area. Some 63 people have been screened, with 11 testing positive.

The Bukit Batu Grisek cluster is a workplace cluster in Tangkak, with its index cases testing positive on Jan 30 in a screening at a factory in Grisek Industrial Area. A total of 130 people have been screened with 18 found positive.

The Bayu Tampoi cluster is a workplace cluster in Johor Bahru, with its first case found positive on Dec 28 in a screening after exhibiting symptoms. Its name refers to the workplace which is located at Jalan Bayu in the Tampoi Industrial Area. Some 171 people have been screened with 14 testing positive.

The Lingkaran Maluri cluster is a workplace cluster in Cheras, with its index cases testing positive on Jan 28 in a screening involving a workplace located at Lingkaran SV in Maluri. A total of 94 people have been screened with 33 found positive.

The Desa Tun cluster is another workplace cluster in Cheras, with its first few cases found positive on Jan 28 in a screening involving a factory at Desa Tun Razak. Some 211 people have been screened with 21 testing positive.

The Jalan Labuk cluster is a workplace cluster in Sandakan, with its index cases testing positive on Jan 23. They were detected in a screening on individuals who were going to stay at the dormitory of a school at Km 18, Jalan Labuk. A total of 176 people have been screened with 15 found positive.

The Lasah cluster is a community cluster in Kuala Kangsar, with its first case found positive on Jan 22 in a screening after exhibiting symptoms. Its name refers to Felda Lasah in Sungai Siput, where a wedding was held and attended by patients in the cluster. Some 71 people have been screened with 24 testing positive.

The Tersat cluster is a community cluster involving Hulu Terengganu, Kuala Terengganu and Marang, with its index case testing positive on Jan 12 in a screening on individuals entering the state from Selangor. Its name refers to Jalan Melati in Felda Tersat, where the patient resides. A total of 391 people have been screened with 35 found positive.

The Tanah Putih cluster is a workplace cluster in Kuantan, with its first case testing positive on Jan 23 in a screening after exhibiting symptoms. Its name refers to the workplace at Jalan Tanah Putih. Some 221 people have been screened with 19 found positive.

The Jalan Ketengah cluster is a workplace cluster involving Kuantan, Temerloh, Jerantut and Maran in Pahang; Seremban in Negeri Sembilan; and Tanah Merah in Kelantan. The index case tested positive on Jan 16 in a screening after exhibiting symptoms. There are 14 positive cases from this cluster.

The Taman Amalina cluster is a community cluster in Raub, with its first case testing positive on Jan 25 in a screening after exhibiting symptoms. Its name refers to Taman Amalina in Jalan Lipis where the patient resides. A total of 21 people have been screened with 13 found positive.

Four clusters officially ended today, namely the Batu Tujuh, D’Bajaru, Jalan Broga construction site and Mador clusters. There are now 387 active clusters, of the total 807 reported.

The Tanjung Suria cluster recorded the highest number of cases today, with 567 infections reported.
