Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Shooting Association (SSA) made history with the election of former High Court judge Datuk Nurchaya Arsad as its first female president.

Her appointment marks a significant step forward for the association, traditionally led by men, as it seeks to expand the sport and strengthen its community presence in Sabah.

In her maiden address during the elections on March 29, Nurchaya thanked members for their confidence, pledging to lead the association with a clear focus on growth and unity.

She outlined the association’s priorities, including developing shooting sports in Sabah, expanding membership and fostering a stronger sense of pride among members.

“Our purpose is clear, to grow shooting in Sabah, expand our membership and represent our association with pride,” she said.

Nurchaya stressed that these goals could only be achieved through collective effort, urging both the committee and members to work together as a cohesive team.

“We can only do this if we work together. I am here to work with all of you. Let us move forward together,” she said.

She also highlighted the diversity of the association’s membership as a key strength, encouraging greater collaboration, idea-sharing and mutual support.

“What makes this association special is that we all come from different backgrounds, and that is our strength,” she said.

Beyond competition, she expressed hope that SSA would evolve into a more inclusive and welcoming space for its members.

“I hope we can make this more than just about shooting, but a second home, a place to relax, bring family and spend time together,” she added.

Nurchaya also paid tribute to past contributors, for their lifelong dedication, and acknowledged several members whose experience and support contributed to her appointment.

The newly elected committee will support her leadership in steering the association forward.

Kia Min Ting was named vice president, while Calson Cassey and Julius Kow Hung Seng were appointed secretary and assistant secretary respectively.

Adrian Zaini will serve as treasurer, assisted by Wong Han Leon. Tan Guan Jing was appointed captain, with Thomas Kiu Chiong Hei as assistant captain.

The committee members comprise Alex @ Phan Yet Chan, Chong Chung Yin, Leong Kui Fui, Zaiton K. Khan, Yap Tzi Fah, John @ Gilbert Johnny and Awangku Iskandar Sarizan Awang Sari.
