Kota Kinabalu: Sabah rhythmic gymnastics athletes achieved remarkable milestones at the recent MGF National Grading for Rhythmic Gymnastics 2026, held in Ipoh, Perak from April 10-12.
They brought home a total of six gold, seven silver and five bronze medals to emerge champions in the Grade 1A Team Event and secured second place in both the Grade 2A and Grade 2B Team Events.
In Grade 1A, Melody Yong Wan Ting was crowned All-Around Champion, winning gold medals in Freehand, Rope and Hoop. Elena Sofia Nair also captured three gold medals in Ball, Clubs and Ribbon, as well as finishing third in the All-Around category.
Mia Lee Yi Na contributed silver medals in Ball and Ribbon, while Ovanya Ohidas Rickson earned a silver in Freehand and bronze in Hoop.
In Grade 2A, Charvelle Doyanne Clarence Tiandun captured silver medals in Freehand and Rope, finished third in the All-Around standings, while Hii Xiang Yun Giovanna delivered a bronze medal in Rope.
In Grade 2B, Tan Yu Teng won a silver in Ribbon and finished third in the All-Around category, while Rochelle Holly Chin Weng Jin won a silver medal in Ball.
Sabah Gymnastic Association president Dr Judy Mahibol was delighted with the team’s achievement and said the success was a result of effective team work.
“I am extremely proud of our athletes and grateful to the coaches and parents who have supported them throughout the journey. Their achievements show that passion, hard work and determination truly pay off.
“Not forgetting also to Sabah Sports Council for their financial support,” she added.
She also commented on the other State athletes who did reasonably well in the competition including Glory Gracesandra Alasther, Ivana Ivy Elysa Debie @ Wilfred and Isabella Caitlyn Daniel competing in Grade 1A, Novy Eva Alexandra Oswald and Charis Lim Sim Yuet in Grade 2B, Evynee Ho Mann Yie and Irisatri Aliyah Ali in Grade 2A.
The State contingent was led by team manager Doreen Ling Pang, Shanne Alyssa Bonaface as coach assisted by Amanda Luan and Ningsari Atiqah Ali, while Jasmine Law Phaik Chan served as the competition coordinator.
