Kota Kinabalu: Former Chief Minister Tan Sri Harris Salleh said it will be far better for Sabah to push the Federal Government to upgrade its schools, hospitals and roads rather than pursue the 40 per cent tax revenue entitlement.
“I would not ask for that (40 per cent). I will ask them to upgrade schools and hospitals in Sabah. That is more important. It will be more than 40 per cent of the tax revenue. Build and fix all the government quarters. Build all the roads. Water supply,” Harris said in an exclusive with Daily Express.
Harris, who was Chief Minister from 1976 to 1985, said Federal expenditure on education and health alone in Sabah could already surpass the 40 per cent threshold, making the prolonged debate over the allocation under the Malaysia Agreement largely unnecessary.
“Let’s say okay, they give you the 40 per cent. They say they finance education and health, maybe that is more than 40 per cent. They can do that. Parliament can do that,” said Harris, 96.
