Kota Kinabalu: Three acres of stockpiled tyres caught fire at the Kayu Madang landfill in Telipok early Tuesday, prompting a response from 30 firefighters (pic).
The Fire and Rescue Department received the emergency call at 12.15am and fire engines arrived at the site some 19km away at 12.36am.
Operations Commander Norkizan Durudin said firefighters used two long hoses stretching 400 feet with four water jets to battle the blaze, drawing water from their fire trucks and water tankers on standby.
Two excavators were also brought in to dig gaps in the ground around the burning pile to stop the fire from spreading.
Crews from three fire stations responded to the emergency, with 12 personnel from Tuaran, nine from Lintas and seven from Kota Kinabalu, supported by a two-person communications team.
Staff from the Dewan Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu were also at the scene. No one was injured.
