Tenom: A 54-year-old man was killed after he was allegedly shot by his elder brother using a homemade firearm known as a bakakuk in Kampung Kangkawang on Sunday.
The incident occurred at about 8am, with the victim, a gardener, found with eight gunshot wounds to the back of his body and pronounced dead at the scene.
Tenom District Police Chief Supt Azmir Abd Razak said police received initial information from the public before a team of officers was dispatched to the location.
“Initial investigations found the suspect, a 57-year-old man who is also the victim’s brother, was inside the house armed with a bakakuk and threatened to shoot anyone approaching the area,” he said in a statement.
He said police surrounded the house and ordered the suspect to surrender three times, but he ignored the instructions and acted aggressively, prompting officers to fire several rounds of tear gas.
“The suspect then pointed the weapon at police personnel from inside the house, forcing an officer to fire three shots using an HK MP5 in self-defence,” he said, adding that the suspect was later found in the kitchen with gunshot wounds and pronounced dead at the scene.
