Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Umno’s open-door policy extends to former members, including those who were previously suspended or left the party, its Chairman Datuk Jafry Ariffin said.
However, those seeking to return must submit a formal application that will be reviewed by a party committee.
Jafry said this when asked about the status of leaders such as Datuk Ir. Shahelmey Yahya and Datuk Andi Muhammad Suryady Bandy after attending a Ramadan iftar on
Thursday with party leaders and component parties. Aid was also distributed to asnaf recipients during the event.
He stressed that Sabah’s political environment remains stable, adding that the decision to reopen the party’s doors is aimed at fostering unity and inclusivity rather than responding to any crisis.
In his speech, Jafry said voters in the last state election showed resistance to “outside” or Malayan-based parties, focusing more on future prospects than past achievements.
“Times have changed, and so have the challenges. Sabah Umno must demonstrate new capability and political acumen to convince the people that it remains the best party to serve Sabah’s future,” he said.
