No upgrade plan for Tamparuli-Ranau road despite congestion
Ahmad said there are currently no immediate plans, as 2024 data showed the road’s Level of Service (LOS) remains at LOS A, meaning it is still able to handle existing traffic flow.
THE Tamparuli–Kiulu–Rondogung Ranau road will be upgraded into a highway under an alternative alignment of the Pan Borneo Highway Sabah Phase Two project.

Tuaran MP Datuk Seri Madius Tangau said the matter was confirmed by Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan during Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat.

Madius said the upgrade will involve three main stretches. The 24.8km Kiulu–Pahu road will be widened to four lanes with an R4 design standard.

The 21.66km Pahu–Rondogung stretch will be upgraded to a two-lane road with R4 design, while the 15.72km Pahu–Tamparuli road will also be upgraded to R4 standard.

He said implementation of the project is expected to be carried out under the next package after completion of the current Pan Borneo Sabah phase.

Earlier, Madius had asked the Works Ministry whether the Government planned to upgrade the Tamparuli–Ranau road into a highway due to worsening traffic congestion.

Ahmad said there are currently no immediate plans, as 2024 data showed the road’s Level of Service (LOS) remains at LOS A, meaning it is still able to handle existing traffic flow.

However, the Pontian MP agreed to Madius’ proposal for a fresh study, noting that the data used was two years old.

“I will instruct the Public Works Department (JKR) to conduct a new study to determine the actual LOS, especially around Tamparuli town and areas mentioned by Tuaran,” he said.

He added that in the meantime, discussions will be held with the traffic authorities to determine appropriate interim measures
