KOTA KINABALU: A jobless man was sentenced to seven years’ jail and one stroke of the cane by the Sessions Court here for sexually assaulting his underage cousin.
Sessions Court Judge Amir Shah Amir Hassan handed down the sentence to the 23-year-old, who pleaded guilty to the charge on Wednesday.

The court also ordered the man to undergo one year of rehabilitation counselling while serving the sentence and to be placed under police supervision for two years after completing the jail term.
The offence was committed against the 14-year and nine-month-old girl at about 3.30am on Feb 23 this year at a house in Papar, where he sexually assaulted the victim.
The offence under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 carries a maximum penalty of 20 years’ imprisonment and whipping upon conviction.
