SK Garau hosts Kudat MSS Cross Country Championship

KUDAT: Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Garau played host to the 2026 Kudat District Schools Sports Council (MSS) Cross Country Championship, marking the first time a district-level event has been organised at the school.

Assistant District Education Officer for the Student Talent Unit (Sports) of the Kudat District Education Office (PPD) Manchul Majujin expressed his appreciation to the school for their commitment as organisers and hoped that the selected athletes would be able to represent the district well at the next level.

The annual championship, held around the school area on Saturday, is part of the official Kudat District MSS calendar and serves as a selection ground for athletes for the State-level Cross Country Championship in Beluran on Apr 2.

The event involved cooperation between the school, the local community and several security and health agencies to ensure the smooth running of the competition.

He said 12 secondary schools participated, involving 140 contestants consisting of 37 boys Under-15, 31 girls Under-15, 41 boys Under-18 and 31 girls Under-18.

For the primary school category, 32 schools joined the championship with a total of 231 contestants, comprising 126 boys Under-12 and 105 girls Under-12.

Team rankings were determined based on the first four runners from each team to complete the race, with the lowest aggregate points being crowned the overall champion.

In the secondary school category, SMK Matunggong emerged as the overall champion, followed by SMK Pinawantai as runner-up, while SMK St. Peter Kudat took third place.

For primary schools, the Matunggong Zone claimed the overall title, followed by SK Padang Banggi in second place and the Sikuati Zone in third.

In the individual results, the girls’ Under-12 category was won by Kimberly Eina Remen from the Matunggong Zone, followed by Alvera Fedora Fardrek, also from the Matunggong Zone, while third place went to Arcely Florinetha Fardrek from SK Garau.

The boys’ Under-12 category was won by Muhamad Riksan Abdullah from SK Padang, followed by Mohammad Asli Abdullah and Messih Ading.

In the girls’ Under-15 category, Quennzy Prettely Jaidi from SMK Pinawantai emerged as champion, while Nur Shafinaz Atishah Pehek from K9 SK Sabur Banggi took

second place and Cassandra Eallveyra Bljeh from SMK Matunggong took third.

For the boys’ Under-15s, Wellonel Felix from SMK Pinawantai won the race, followed by Rendy Arya Saputra from K9 SK Sabur and Muhamad Hasrim Alip Karim from SMK Abdul Rahim.

The girls’ Under-18 category saw Ritchell Amanda Edward Tigawon from SMK Matunggong emerge as winner, followed by Nor Anisa Sahara Ibno from SMK Sikuati and Anzeozalina Zeolie Robert, also from SMK Matunggong.

In the boys’ Under-18 category, Mohammad Ekmal Jamal from SMK Abdul Rahim took first place, followed by Hassan Shah Habibullah from SMK St. Peter Kudat and Chris Bryan Stanley from SMK Matunggong.

SK Garau Headmaster and Organising Chairman Wahiddin Rashid said the championship is not merely an annual event but an important platform for selecting district representatives for the state level, as well as encouraging pupils to maintain training discipline and health care.

Also present was Kudat District Technical Officer Samsu Rudi as an assistant for monitoring and compliance with competition rules.

The event was also supported by school alumni, Matunggong Zone teachers, Narandang Health Clinic, the Malaysia Civil Defence Force (APM) and the Kudat District PDRM School Liaison Officer.
