Kota Kinabalu: Bornean Pygmy elephants being poached for their ivory, including in the Maliau Basin, has attracted the attention of New York Times in the US which exposed it last December, Daily Express can reveal.
Daily Express reached out to the reporter Zunaira Saieed who confirmed having been in Sabah with a colleague and that she went to the ground as well as talked to relevant people, including Sabah wildlife personnel.
The NYT reported that 13 elephants were killed for their ivory since July 2024, according to rangers. Five of them were beheaded.
Former State Tourism and Environment Minister Datuk Christina Liew had confirmed that that were six such cases in 2024 and one case last year. It was not known whether the other cases were kept from public knowledge.
