LABUAN: The Labuan karate team brought home 11 medals – three golds, two silvers and six bronzes – at the Kejohanan Jawa Timur (Jatim) Open Karate Tournament – Piala Kemenpora RI 2026, held at GOR Ken Arok, Malang, Indonesia.
Its President, Renshi Aswadee Taba, said the achievement demonstrated the ability of Labuan Karate athletes to compete at the international level and served as a positive indicator for the development of karate in Labuan.
The nine-member team placed 10th out of 81 contingents involving 1,396 athletes.
Senior athlete Syarulniza Abdul Jamil opened the medal tally by winning gold in the Kumite Senior Wanita 61-kilogramme (kg) event.
The momentum continued when Muhammad Isyraf Faiz Mohd Ismifarizal secured gold in the Kumite Senior Lelaki +84kg event and added silver in the Kumite U21 Lelaki +84kg category.
Ayqal Mohd Dzulfadly delivered the team’s third gold after emerging champion in the Kumite U14 Lelaki -55kg event.
Mohamad Aqib Aimar Mohamad Affendi won silver in the Kumite U12 Lelaki -35kg category after narrowly losing in the final and also secured a bronze medal in the Kata U12 Lelaki event, while Muhammad Adil Mohd Badruddin contributed two bronzes in the Kata Junior Lelaki and Kumite Junior Lelaki -68kg categories.
Twin siblings Nur Aleesya Dayana Asmadie and Nur Ariesya Dayana Asmadie each won bronze in the Kumite Kadet Perempuan -54kg and Kumite Kadet Perempuan -47kg categories respectively, while the team’s sixth bronze medal was delivered by Khaidyn Nazeem Mazri in the Kumite Kadet Lelaki +70kg category, said Renshi.
