Cup triumph was testament to Rhinos’ fighting spirit
CONGRATULATIONS to Sabah FC for winning the MFL Challenge Cup. It was a thrilling match that ended in a dramatic penalty shootout.

After a challenging 90 minutes and extra time without any goals, Sabah FC emerged victorious by winning 4-3 on penalties, thanks to a standout performance from goalkeeper Damien Lim, who saved two penalty kicks and Farhan Roslan who kept his composure to score the winning spot kick.

As I had expected, Penang FC came fully prepared. Although Sabah FC started off aggressively, the visitors were more organised and started to control the game after ten minutes.

Their commanding performance effectively pinning Sabah FC in their own half. The team’s relentless pressure and tactical prowess left Sabah FC struggling to break free.

Had Penang FC capitalised on their scoring opportunities, I was certain they could have secured the win well before halftime.

Sabah FC played better at the restart and only came to life towards the end of the game, but just like always, we just didn’t have the finishing despite having the better of the game in the second half and cheered on by 20,000 supporters.

It was a closely contested match that showcased defensive strategies over offensive flair.

Throughout the full 90 minutes and the subsequent extra time, both teams struggled to find the back of the net, highlighting a common adage in football: you don’t score goals, you don’t win.

In the end, it was decided by a nail-biting penalty shootout and to the joy of the home supporters, Sabah FC were able to deliver under the immerse pressure, contrasting with Penang FC’s missed opportunities, which ultimately cost them the trophy.

We emerged victorious in the tournament, demonstrating that luck definitely plays a crucial role in sports.

Once again, cheers to Sabah FC for putting their hands on the trophy.

We have finally secured our first cup trophy in over three decades. The victory is a testament to the team’s resilience and dedication, marking a significant milestone in our history.

This will no doubt help to offset the disappointment of losing in the FA Cup final last year and a rather poor league season.

I hope the performance of the players on the night captivated the fans and reignited more local support.

The achievement also holds significant potential for the team’s reputation, and this could be the stepping stone to future successes.
