Tenom: Close cooperation between the Chinese community and other residents in the Melalap constituency has been a key factor in driving rural development and social stability, said Sabah Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry and Melalap Assemblyman Datuk Jamawi Jaafar.
He said the Chinese community in Melalap is actively involved not only in business and small and medium enterprises but also in community programmes, welfare activities and unity initiatives in the Tenom area.
Jamawi said this when met by reporters during a Chinese New Year 2026 walkabout programme in Tenom town on Saturday.
He said the walkabout served as a platform to strengthen harmony between the Chinese community and other ethnic groups such as the Murut, Dusun and Lundayeh.
“The programme is not only to celebrate the festive season but also to allow elected representatives to go down to the ground and understand the needs of the people,” he said.
During the programme, mandarin oranges were distributed to the public as a symbol of the festive celebration.
Jamawi and his wife also mingled with residents who joined the walkabout.
“I appreciate the continued support of the Chinese community in the Melalap constituency and of all segments of society. We will also prepare to celebrate other annual festivals together.
“The public is invited to attend the Chinese New Year 2026 celebration for the Melalap constituency at Malleh Square on Feb 15 (Sunday), where various activities have been arranged,” he said.
Those present included Tenom Hakka Association chairman Datuk Yong Oi Kiang, SM Chung Hwa board of management chairman Datuk Eng Tet Hau, District Chief OKK Tusib Tulas, Community Development Leader for Melalap constituency Denesly Justin and local Chinese community leaders.
