He said two officers on routine patrol stopped a white Perodua Viva at about 10.45am along Jalan Persisiran Pantai before a man in the vehicle fled, abandoning the car, and was later apprehended at the Bazhong Tawau Commercial Centre area.
During the arrest, the man allegedly refused to cooperate and acted aggressively, resulting in a struggle during which a shot was discharged from a pistol held by one of the officers, injuring the suspect’s left hand, while another officer who assisted was also shot and sustained an injury to his right thigh.
Champin said both the injured officer and suspect were taken by ambulance to Tawau Hospital for further treatment, adding that initial investigations found the suspect in possession of another person’s identity card and that a vehicle inspection led to the discovery of suspicious powder believed to be syabu, while the classification of the case has yet to be determined as reports are still being received.
