RANAU: The Mountain Cave Search and Rescue (Mocsar) team responded quickly to rescue a 33 year-old local man who suffered complications while scaling Mount Kinabalu, here, Friday.
Ranau Fire and Rescue Department Chief, PPgB Rantey Fred, said the incident happened in KM1 of the Mount Kinabalu climbing trail, at about 9.41am.
“We received a call through the Station Line and a team of six Mocsar personnel led by the Operation Officer, PBB Hafiz Soinin rushed to the scene. Also involved were five Sabah Parks personnel.
“When the team arrived at the location situated one kilometre away from the Mocsar post, we found that there was a climber who suffered from chest pain and shortness of breath while descending from the mountain.
“He was unable to continue his journey on his own. The Mocsar team together with Sabah Park took action to bring the victim down using a stretcher to Timpohon Gate,” he said.
He said, the victim was handed over to Sabah Park team and then the victim was sent to the Hospital using a Sabah Park vehicle. The operation ended at 11.14am.
According to Rantey, the case on Wednesday became the first case for the month of February and also for the year 2026.
He reiterated his advice to all future climbers to take a serious assessment of their health before climbing Mount Kinabalu.
He said there must be a mental and physical preparation, and only bring along suitable and necessary items.
He also advised climbers scaling Mount Kinabalu to be extra careful during the current rainy season because the ground surface and rocks are more slippery than during normal weather.
“Always climb in groups, don’t walk alone and make sure to be attentive to what the guides advise us. This is so important in order to avoid any untoward incidents in the future,” he said.
