Underground water pipe damage poses safety risk
Wong said she has received several public complaints regarding burst underground water pipes and unstable water supply in Sandakan, including in Mile 3 and Jalan Utara.
SANDAKAN: Damage to underground water pipes has not only disrupted water supply stability but also poses potential risks to road structures and public safety.

Sandakan MP Vivian Wong said the relevant authorities must urgently identify the cause of the problem and carry out comprehensive repair and improvement works.

She said this is necessary to ensure the water supply system returns to normal operation for consumers in the district.

Wong said she has received several public complaints regarding burst underground water pipes and unstable water supply in Sandakan, including in Mile 3 and Jalan Utara.

She said authorities must improve efficiency in addressing the issue and strengthen monitoring after repair works are completed to prevent a recurrence.

Earlier, Wong inspected the condition of the concrete structure beneath a water pipe at Taman Mutiara, Mile 3½ Jalan Utara, which is feared to be no longer able to withstand soil erosion.

She said the situation poses a risk of further collapse and raises safety concerns among residents.

Wong said she has contacted the Water Department, the Public Works Department (PWD) and the relevant technical slope unit to conduct a joint assessment as soon as possible.

She said the assessment aims to identify the cause of the soil erosion and implement appropriate repair and reinforcement measures to resolve the problem comprehensively.
