Kota Kinabalu: Authorities seized 27,000kg of frozen chicken drumsticks worth an estimated RM268,410 that were imported without valid permits in a joint operation.
The raid was carried out by the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS Sabah) and involved inspection of a 40-foot container at Sepanggar Port (pic), followed by a cold storage facility in Inanam Laut.

The owner failed to present any import permits or licences issued by DVS, rendering the products illegal under federal laws.
State Agriculture and Food Industries Minister Datuk Jamawi Jaafar commended DVS Sabah for the swift and professional execution of the operation.
“The state government views any attempt to bring in food products without proper approval very seriously, as it threatens public health, biosecurity, and confidence in our food control systems,” he said.
He stressed that the operation demonstrates Sabah’s firm commitment to allowing only legally compliant products into the market. DVS Sabah Director Dr Zul Bahar explained that the enforcement was carried out in a phased and coordinated manner for maximum effectiveness.
It involved close collaboration between the Kota Kinabalu DVS Enforcement Unit, Veterinary Inspection Unit, and the KKIA/Kargo Quarantine Unit to ensure compliance with safety standards.
Dr Zul also acknowledged the support of enforcement partners, including the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) and the Royal Malaysian Customs Department, for their role in the seizure.
He said the inter-agency collaboration was key to ensuring that illegal imports are intercepted promptly and enforcement is carried out with integrity.
“The operation sends a strong message that Sabah will not tolerate illegal food imports and remains committed to protecting the health and welfare of its people,” Dr Zul said.
