KUDAT: A total of 56 Form Four and Five science stream students from SMK Lok Yuk were exposed to the oil and gas engineering field through the STEM Awareness: Next Gen Oil and Gas programme held at the school, recently.
The programme was part of the STI 1003 initiative, which encourages the active involvement of 100 local scientists with 100 schools within 100 days per implementation cycle to strengthen the culture of science, technology and innovation among students.

Activities began with an interactive Energy Quest session aimed at creating a relaxed and engaging learning environment between participants and facilitators.
Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Oil and Gas Engineering Programme head Dr Norfazliana Abdullah said early exposure to the field was important in helping students understand the scope of studies, learning opportunities and career prospects in the growing energy industry.
She said oil and gas engineering not only contributes to national development but also offers opportunities for innovation and sustainable engineering solutions.
The programme featured an Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) Innovation Competition, which tested students’ creativity and critical thinking in applying basic concepts to improve oil production through innovative and sustainable approaches.
The activity also introduced participants to real-world engineering solutions used in the industry.
Also held was the Energy4 Me Career Pathway sharing session by SGS Malaysia Regional Sales Manager Khairee Mad Saad and Kudat Vocational College Quality Assurance head Mohd Fadzli Morad, who shared insights on industry skills, education pathways and career opportunities in technical and engineering fields.
The session was attended by about 700 students and teachers of SMK Lok Yuk, extending the programme’s impact to the wider school community.
The programme was supported by facilitators from the UMS Faculty of Engineering’s Oil and Gas Engineering Programme, as well as instructors and students from Kudat Vocational College, who guided activities and encouraged active participation.
