Kota Kinabalu: ConocoPhillips has launched its flagship Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (Stem) Accelerator programme in Sabah, reinforcing its commitment to education, talent development and community advancement in the state.
The company said it will commit RM1.2 million in 2026 to launch the programme and sustain existing Stem initiatives as part of its long-term investment in education.
This is in addition to the RM1.7 million ConocoPhillips has contributed since 2023, when it first began working with stakeholders on Stem-related programmes.
The launch in here was officiated by Sabah State Education Department Deputy Director Krishna K.S @ Mohd Fadzli Abd Rozan together with senior representatives from SMJ Energy and ConocoPhillips’ corporate social responsibility partners.
These partners include Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP), Pintar Foundation and Persatuan Alumni Universiti Texas (Paut).
ConocoPhillips said increasing enrolment in the secondary-level Pure Science (Stem A) stream and sustaining student interest through vocational and tertiary education are essential to strengthening the future talent pipeline for the oil and gas industry.
The company’s involvement in Stem education began in 2023 through its partnership with UTP on the StemXplore programme, which has reached 41 schools and benefited more than 4,000 students.
The Stem Accelerator, which complements existing efforts, is designed to build curiosity, strengthen foundations and boost confidence in Mathematics and Science among Form 1 to Form 5 students.
Beginning this year, the programme will reach more than 3,000 students across 35 schools in five districts covering Sabah’s west coast, east coast and northern regions.
It will provide hands-on workshops and additional tuition for students, structured training guides and mentoring for teachers, and home learning toolkits to support parents.
The programme aims to improve academic achievement in Stem subjects and increase enrolment in Stem electives to strengthen Sabah’s long-term talent pipeline.
“We thank the Sabah State Education Department, SMJ Energy and our partners for their strong support. Together, these partnerships form a cohesive Stem ecosystem that aligns education priorities with industry relevance and community impact” said ConocoPhillips Malaysia KBB Operations General Manager Krish Krishnan.
ConocoPhillips Malaysia President Connor Dunn said this is an investment in Sabah’s future by helping to develop a capable workforce needed to meet the state’s growth ambitions.
