Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Young Business & Industry Leaders Network (SYBIL) successfully hosted its Chinese New Year networking event, bringing together over 70 leaders and distinguished guests from government, GLCs, corporate organisations, and local Sabahan businesses.
The event was led by SYBIL organising chair Gordon Pan of The Big G and provided an evening of engagement and dialogue focused on the state’s economic future.

A key highlight of the night was an address by SYBIL Vice President cum Nominated Assemblyman Datuk Roger Chin, who reflected on the organisation’s ethos of building, contributing, and taking responsibility.
Roger said SYBIL is more than an organisation, describing it as a culture where leadership is defined by responsibility rather than title.
He emphasised that real leaders act with courage, even in unfamiliar or challenging situations, and that members are encouraged to volunteer, learn through action, and support one another while rejecting divisive mindsets.
“The culture of quietly contributing, building trust, and uplifting others without seeking recognition fosters true leadership, where consistent effort naturally leads to greater opportunities,” he said.
Roger also highlighted the need to develop young Sabahans to own businesses, lead industries, and shape policies, stating that Sabah’s economic future should not be outsourced.
“My dream for Sabah’s economic future is for Sabah to build companies that scale beyond our shores and retain our resources to create value within the state,” he said.
The event also recognised the leadership of SYBIL Founding President Datuk James Wong and Roger, whose transition from industry leadership to public service exemplifies the values SYBIL promotes.
SYBIL praised their contributions as role models who demonstrate that consistent effort, integrity, and commitment to Sabah lead to greater responsibility and wider impact.
The evening highlighted upcoming initiatives, including SYBIL’s flagship CEO Masterclass 2026 led by Precilla Fong, featuring Dato Sri Idris Jala as keynote speaker, and acknowledged Jack Lee for his work with the Blue Economy Taskforce and the SMJ Secretariat.
James reaffirmed that SYBIL was established to strengthen partnerships between government and the private sector, particularly Sabahan-owned businesses, to advance the “Sabah First” principle and support the development goals of Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) 2.0 roadmap plan.
