SANDAKAN: A dam will be built in Kinabatangan if Warisan forms the government after the 17th Sabah Election, said Warisan President Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.
He expressed confidence the project could be implemented while taking into account local wildlife and the ecosystem in the area.
“If the Bakun Dam in Sarawak can be built and now benefits the people, why can’t we build a dam here?
“If realised, it will certainly help address water problems and other related issues,” he told a press conference after attending the Warisan Mega Ceramah at Bandar Kim Fung, Batu 4.
The event was attended by Warisan candidates for the seats in Zone Five, covering Sandakan, Beluran, Kinabatangan, Libaran and Batu Sapi.
Over 4,000 people attended the ceramah, which also saw more than 1,200 members from other parties joining Warisan.
Shafie said the mega ceramah, held across the State, explained Warisan’s mission, vision and direction this election, including plans for water, electricity and roads, as well as proposals to establish a Education Ministry and a Health Ministry for Sabah.
“We are committed to creating more job opportunities for young people without forcing them to migrate far from their hometowns,” he said.
He also emphasised the need for a better public transport system in Sabah and expressed hope for a modern railway line from Kudat to other identified areas for public convenience.
“Downstream industries are also among our agenda to boost the local economy,” he said.
Earlier in his speech, Shafie highlighted the election’s importance for Sabah and urged the people to choose wisely for the future of their children.
“We are fielding smart and professional candidates, both young and experienced, who will carry the voice of the people,” he said.
He also reiterated Warisan’s commitment to combating corruption and investigate any parties involved in such issues.
