Kota Kinabalu: The legal team representing the mother of Zara Qairina Mahathir doubts the intention of certain quarters to stage a #JusticeForZara Rally 3.0 during the final stage of the 17th Sabah election campaign period.
“We understand the public sentiment and appreciate the support, but the inquest proceedings are now in a critical phase, with key witnesses currently giving their testimonies.
“Any public gathering involving elements of protest or mass pressure may be interpreted as an attempt to influence the proceedings, which could undermine the independence and integrity of the Court,” said lawyer Shahlan Jufri.
“Therefore, we advise any public activity related to this case be carried out only after obtaining proper legal advice and with utmost caution.”
Shahlan also noted that a politician from a peninsula-based party, currently campaigning in Sabah, had issued social media statements that amount to contempt of court.
“Contempt proceedings against two individuals, a local political figure and an influencer, have been fixed this Monday Dec. 1.
“The legal team is reviewing these statements and will not hesitate to take legal action.”
Regarding the application by a NGO to cancel the inquest, Shahlan said they hope the application will be dismissed.
“We believe the inquest, from the first day until today, has been conducted in accordance with the existing laws, not according to the whims of the court or any party involved.
“And it should be noted that the application was never approved or given any ‘blessing’ by Zara’s mother. She is an interested party in this inquest.”
