TAWAU: The Home Ministry has reaffirmed its commitment to speeding up citizenship decisions for late birth registration applicants in Sabah through closer cooperation with the State Government.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution said existing constitutional provisions were sufficient and only required supporting regulations, backed by a joint federal–state committee he co-chairs with Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.
He told reporters in Merotai that the committee was examining long-delayed cases, including the naturalisation issues affecting holders of the MyKad Penduduk Sementara whose status often lapses into statelessness.
Saifuddin urged those facing documentation problems to come forward so their cases could be reviewed and expedited, adding that recent meetings with the Chief Minister had already approved several applications within the legal framework.
He said the initiative, also practised in Sarawak, aimed to address the struggles of undocumented children and communities, and stressed that Pakatan Harapan’s efforts in Sabah reflected genuine intent rather than campaign rhetoric.
