Kota Kinabalu: The Music Authors Copyright Protection (MACP) will continue to strengthen its programs in Sabah and Sarawak to raise awareness about the copyright of music creators and the protection of their works.
MACP Board Member representing East Malaysia Roger Wang stated that this year, MACP organised two events in Sabah and plans to hold approximately four events annually in Sarawak in the future, depending on available resources and capacity.
“This year, we have already held two events in Sabah, and the feedback has been very positive. Many new talents have emerged from Sabah and Sarawak, and even our members have requested that MACP’s presence in East Malaysia be expanded.
“With the growth of the digital era, the number of creators from Sabah and Sarawak has significantly increased, and the members of the organization have demanded that MACP strengthen its services.
“Through more programs in Sabah, we aim to get closer to the music industry players and increase awareness about copyright,” he said during the recent MACP Media Meet-and-Greet event, Tuesday.
Roger said the number of MACP members in East Malaysia is around 500, representing seven percent of the total membership of MACP in the country.
“The awareness level about MACP’s role in East Malaysia is still lower compared to Peninsular Malaysia, even though many have heard of the collection and licensing processes.
“Many composers do not fully understand MACP’s role or are not confident about becoming members. Additionally, we found that many are unaware of how to use the online platform MyKarya, which allows them to check their song registrations and royalty collections,” he added.
Roger also mentioned that the membership requirements have now been simplified, with only one active song on a streaming platform and at least 1,000 views required for registration eligibility.
