Kota Kinabalu: Anwar assured that the millions of Ringgit seized in the long-running “Sabah Watergate scandal” will be eventually returned to Sabah if it is confirmed to be allocations meant for Sabah’s water projects.
He said this in response to a Daily Express question that it would be unfair for the RM130 million in assets and cash to go into the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) coffers, instead.
It is the nation’s longest corruption trial now entering its ninth year without any closure.
The trial also heard that certain Ministers in the then Sabah Barisan Nasional administration benefitted from an elaborate scheme to siphon millions of ringgit from allocations meant to solve Sabah’s water problem.
Anwar said the Federal Government is bound by existing financial procedures.
“There is a process. Of course, it goes to the consolidated fund because of the law. But if the money is for water allocation for Sabah, then the money would be returned to the State,” he assured.
Anwar added that similar cases have seen the funds channelled back to the rightful State or agency once verification is completed.
