Kota Kinabalu: Political leaders should demonstrate a high level of maturity and consider the emotional and social impact their words may cause, said Executive Director of Gardenia Bakeries (East Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, Datuk Dexter Lau.
He said any form of belittling or demeaning statements directed at Sabahans whether intentional or otherwise is wholly unacceptable.
He was referring to Kedah State Housing, Local Government and Health Committee Chairman, Mansor Zakaria, who remarked in the state assembly there that “giving Gardenia bread is enough to win the support of Sabahans.”
Lau hoped Mansor’s intention was merely to highlight East Malaysians’ fondness for Gardenia bread or to remind fellow candidates to “eat well and stay healthy” during the intense election campaign period.
However, he said, if there was any element of belittlement or condescension, no amount of apology will fully heal the collective emotional hurt felt.
“Sabahans should not be made the objects of jokes,” he said.
“Leaders must promote respect and unity, not create misunderstanding, prejudice or emotional backlash.
“Political maturity is a responsibility one must uphold.”
Dexter, who heads the Malaysia-China Chamber of Commerce (Sabah) and the National MCCC Business Sector Committee, stressed that ministers and politicians should choose their words carefully.
“Whether in West or East Malaysia, only relationships built on mutual respect and equal dialogue can truly move the nation forward.”
Mansor has since apologised. Gardenia is a subsidiary of Kim Teck Cheong Consolidated Berhad.
