Kota Kinabalu: Barisan Nasional (BN) Chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi welcomed the Federal Government’s decision to respect the principle of Sabah’s 40 percent special grant entitlement as stipulated in the Federal Constitution.
He said the decision not to file an appeal against the court ruling on the matter was a step in the right direction and reflected the government’s commitment to the spirit of federalism and to honouring the rights of Sabahans as guaranteed since the formation of Malaysia.
“The Federal Government’s move is both appropriate and in line with the constitutional spirit, recognising the rights of Sabahans that have long been assured,” Zahid said in a statement on Wednesday.
He added that BN also took note of the Cabinet’s decision to resume negotiations between the Federal and Sabah governments to ensure the proper and transparent implementation of the special grant.
“From the beginning, BN has always prioritised the interests of the people of Sabah by defending their constitutional and agreement-based rights, while ensuring that every Federal commitment to the state is fulfilled fairly and accountably,” Zahid said.
He reaffirmed BN’s consistency in championing the rights of Sabah — and other states — within the framework of law and the Constitution, in order to maintain Malaysia’s stability, prosperity, and inclusiveness.
