Call to replace Sipitang wooden bridge with concrete
The deteriorating wooden bridge in Kampung Sungai Bubus.
SIPITANG: The wooden bridge in Kampung Sungai Bubus must be urgently replaced with a concrete structure as it is deteriorating and poses serious safety risks to residents.

Former Village Security and Development Committee (JKKK) Chairman Anuar Latif said the bridge, which serves as the main link for villagers travelling to town, school, and work, is rotting and now requires constant maintenance.

“The wooden bridge is deteriorating day by day and now requires frequent management. It would be much better if it were replaced with a concrete structure instead of using timber materials,” he told Daily Express on Monday.

He said the contractor who built the bridge had used poor-quality wood, raising fears that the main deck could collapse and cut off access to the entire community.

“If the bridge collapses, it would cause great inconvenience to the villagers,” he warned.

Anuar urged the Public Works Department (JKR) to closely monitor the bridge’s condition and take immediate action.

A resident known only as Matsani said there are no alternative routes for villagers if the bridge becomes impassable.

He added that the issue should be given urgent attention by former Sindumin Assemblyman Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob and Sipitang Assemblyman Datuk Matbali Musah, stressing that the bridge must be rebuilt in concrete for the safety of residents who depend on it.
