Semporna tourism operators call for help as fuel prices soar

SEMPORNA: Consideration for creating a support mechanism or special exemptions for tourism operators is seen as necessary to assist those affected by rising petrol prices and the implementation of limits on purchasing fuel using containers in this district.

Semporna Local Bumiputera Tourism Operators Association (Puspabumi) Chairman Madzafar Madzahala said this step is vital to help tourism operators, especially those who rely fully on sea transport for their daily operations.

He said fuel supply is a basic necessity for tourism operators for tasks such as transport, transferring tourists and tourism activities like ‘island hopping’ and so on.

He said the increase in fuel prices and the setting of purchase limits have a direct impact on tourism operators, such as increasing operating costs and affecting logistics planning and supply.

“The price hike and the setting of purchase limits require more meticulous planning, especially for small and medium-sized operators.

“Appropriate support mechanisms or special exemptions need to be examined to help operators maintain operational stability without affecting their business planning,” he said.

According to Madzafar, this move could also help maintain the competitiveness of the local tourism industry, which may be affected and could potentially cause a gradual surge in the price of holiday packages.

At the same time, he said this matter also places financial pressure on boat operators and travel agencies if not addressed immediately.

Therefore, he hopes that a balanced solution can be reached to ensure the survival of the tourism industry and that the welfare of industry players remains protected in Sabah and across Malaysia.
