PENAMPANG: In a pioneering effort to prevent the extinction of ethnic languages in Sabah, artificial intelligence (AI) and digital animation are being harnessed as innovative tools to revitalise mother tongues among the younger generation.
The initiative was carried out through a five-day workshop that brought together 30 participants from various ethnic groups to learn how to produce animations in their respective native languages.
Organised by the Lotud Community Learning Centre (LCLC) in collaboration with the Borneo Institute for Indigenous Studies (BorIIS), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), the Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL) Malaysia, PACOS Trust, and the Kadazandusun Language Foundation (KLF), the programme was funded by the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF).
Held from August 18 to 22, at the Lomunu Training Centre in Penampang, the workshop saw each participant successfully complete at least one animated video using mobile and computer-based applications.
