LABUAN: The Chinese Chamber of Commerce here pledged full co-operation with the Department of Environment (DOE) for the orderly development of the island but at the same time wants the department to be more understanding and not severely rule-minded.
Chamber Chairman Datuk Wong Kii Yii said Labuan is a small island and could be easier managed unlike Kuala Lumpur.
He said to assist the island’s progress, rules have to be flexible and discretion exercised.
“Being too strict would escalate the cost of development and dampen investors to the detriment of Labuan,” he said after leading a six-member delegation to pay a courtesy call on new Labuan DOE Director Zulfadzli Zakaria at his office.
According to Wong, he had also earlier highlighted Labuan DOE-related matters to Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Climate Change, Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii.
He noted that it would be difficult for Labuan if the DOE uses “one rule to fit all.”
Wong also reminded that the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Abrahim, during his visit here last year, instructed all ministers and directors related to socio-economy to visit Labuan and help find solutions to speed up the island’s progress.
